What a screenshot organizer is for
Screenshots accumulate faster than any other kind of file. They land on the Desktop and in Downloads with names like Screenshot 2026-09-30 at 14.22.51.png, and within a month there are hundreds of them. You remember what one looked like. You do not remember what it was called or which folder it ended up in.
The job of a screenshot organizer is to close that gap: to let you find a capture by looking at it rather than by remembering a filename. Kapture Pro does that with a visual library, and then gives you two ways to keep it in order.
Projects and Collections
These are the two structures Kapture Pro uses to organize screenshots, and they answer different questions.
Projects are the primary working structure. One project holds one piece of work in hand. Any folder inside your Kapture folder becomes a project automatically, which means the organizing you already do in Finder or File Explorer is the organizing Kapture Pro uses. There is nothing to set up and nothing to migrate.
Collections live inside the Library. A collection groups captures you simply want kept together, whichever project they came from: a reference set, a colour study, everything you have collected about one competitor. A capture can belong to a project and to several collections at the same time, because a file sits in exactly one folder but can be about many things.
The short version: projects are for the work you are doing, collections are for the things you want to keep together.
Smart: five tools for maintaining a library
Organizing screenshots once is easy. Keeping a library in order over years is the hard part, and that is what Smart is for. It is one workspace in Kapture Pro with five tools.
Unorganised lists every capture that is not in a project yet, from every source, so nothing quietly disappears into the pile.
Duplicates finds files that are identical byte for byte. It shows you the group and lets you choose which copy to keep. It never picks for you.
Cleanup surfaces older and larger captures worth a second look, grouped by age and by size. Nothing here is removed for you.
Sources groups captures by where they came from, so you can see that a third of the library came from one site. This is worked out locally from what is already indexed, with no network lookups.
Rules file new captures the way you asked. When something is true about a capture, Kapture Pro files it. Rules never delete anything.
Local by default
Kapture Pro is a local screenshot manager in the literal sense. It indexes files that are already on your disk. There is no account to create, no cloud to sync with and nothing uploaded, and it contains no analytics, advertising or tracking.
Being local-first is the point. Capturing, storing and organising your library all happen on your own machine, and the features described on this page work without requiring a cloud service. What Kapture Pro indexes is ordinary file information: names, sizes, dimensions, formats, dates, the source a capture came from, and whatever tags and notes you add yourself.
Where the screenshots come from
Two places, and Kapture Pro treats them the same way. The first is your operating system's own screenshot key, which is why Desktop Screenshots is one of the rows in the Library. The second is Kapture for Chrome, the free companion extension, which captures a complete web page or a selected area of one and saves it as PNG, JPEG or PDF into the project folder you choose.
That pairing is the part most screenshot organizers do not have. The capture tool and the library are the same product, so a web page you captured this morning is already filed by the time you open the library.
Platforms and availability
Kapture for Chrome is available now and free, for Google Chrome 120 or later.
Kapture Pro is the desktop half, planned for Mac and for Windows. Neither desktop build has been released yet, so there is nothing to download for either platform today. The Kapture homepage shows the current state of both, and Help carries the release notes.
Languages
Kapture for Chrome and Kapture Pro are both available in nine languages: English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Japanese, German, French, Brazilian Portuguese and Italian. Each also offers a System / Default option that follows whatever language your computer is already set to.
